Welcome to Dr. Jessica Isom's hub for racial equity and antiracism in health care and medicine. We're on a mission to disrupt systemic racism within the health care medical sphere, ensuring that each individual—regardless of their racial background—receives equitable, culturally-informed, and compassionate care.

Will edit: I am a community and academic psychiatrist, racial equity and justice advocate, medical educator, writer, and public speaker. My work focuses on improving access to high-quality health care for racially marginalized patients, particularly Black diasporic communities. My teaching integrates population health approaches, critical race theoretical frameworks, and explicit strategies to address how racism impacts all levels of health care. Through consultations at local, state, and national levels, I center these topics to raise awareness and drive structural changes in health care practices.
Over the last decade, I have been involved in graduate medical education focused on social justice and health equity. As a trauma-informed psychiatrist, I believe role modeling is essential to the learning experiences I create. My past work includes curricula, keynotes, and facilitated discussions addressing multi-level racism in clinical settings, infusing social justice into the workforce, and exploring equity-minded quality improvement. Naming race and racism is integral to my approach, as sharing a common language is critical for achieving justice and equity.
I have collaborated with community members and organizations to enhance health promotion and advocacy. In recent years, my focus on substance use disorders and impacted populations has deepened, encompassing workforce development, community engagement, and consulting with service providers. Recently, I have integrated climate justice and health into my work, blending professional expertise with lived experiences of climate-related threats.
I have held leadership roles in organized medicine, contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. My efforts focus on improving workplace climates, creating discrimination policies, developing pipeline programs, and supporting marginalized identities. These roles have allowed me to raise awareness of inter-group dynamics and nurture professional inclusion.
I am passionate about partnering with individuals and organizations committed to advancing equity in health care, particularly racial equity and justice. I offer expertise as a consultant and collaborator for educational opportunities, policy development and organizational improvements addressing how structural and cultural racism undermines patient care. The growing interest in progressive changes inspires me, and I am eager to contribute to this essential work.I am a community and academic psychiatrist, racial equity and justice advocate, medical educator, writer, and public speaker. “I am committed to this work because health should never be determined by race, geography or other intersection of social positioning.”

"Very vulnerable experience, very helpful. Opened my eyes to so much. And I feel better prepared.”

“I am very grateful for this opportunity--thank you very much. You all did a wonderful job of meeting each participant where they are in their journey toward anti-racism. You also incorporated personal, professional, and organizational growth toward anti-racism, which made this relevant not only to our work as leaders of <organization>, but also our own personal development and our development as clinicians. I appreciated the hands on, practical activities that give us some clear pathways for moving this work forward in the organization. Very excellent training. Thanks again.”

“I would recommend this training because the way this training provides education in a compassionate way would allow all to learn and know how to implement action.”

“This was such an effective talk. The frame we are living in was so clearly stated, the analysis of how we avoid talking about race helpful and cringe worthy. I feel like she has given us a number of starting points to move forward. I think for our clinic we will need to start with crunching some data about who is being served and who isn't. Then setting up systems to keep looking at this data to keep us accountable. I will look forward to looking into her slides and resources further.”
